Albannach

The Day of a Hundred Smiles

„Mum, who are these men in skirts with the bags?” whispered one of the boys, in a slightly frightened voice. And the question was appropriate. It is quite unusual that the visitors of a children’s hospital wear traditional Scottish clothes. The first charity event of Albannach was called the Day of a Hundred Smiles. We took one hundred presents and gave them to the children staying in the children’s hospital of Madarász Street.
The leadership of Albannach met with unexpected success on 11 May 2005 in the children’s hospital of Madarász Street. Luckily not only our strange outfit, but also the presents hidden in the bags raised a smile in the face of the children. And this was our only aim. Our society was collecting and buying the presents for long months and finally we managed to put together all the hundred bags, which we gave to the children lying in the medical and surgery wards, together with György Kéri, the first Hungarian bagpiper and Gábor Kapócs, then under-secretary of the Ministry of Health. Thanks to several Scottish and Hungarian companies, the bags contained toys, Scottish and other story-books, CD-ROMs, children’s magazines, sweets and other presents. The most popular gifts, of course, were the teddy-bears and other animals, together with the English speaking CD-ROMs. The secretary of Albannach put together different packages for the different age groups, so that everybody could find a present suitable for them.
We would like to continue the Day of a Hundred Smiles and create a tradition. To do this, we will need further help and support from our sponsors. We truly hope that those hundred smiles could help the children a lot to get well.
