The Caledonia Bar has opened its gates

The sound of a Scottish bagpipe signalled the opening of Budapest’s first authentic Scottish bar, the Caledonia. The charming restaurant is located in Mozsár Street and will probably become a favourite place for the members of Albannach. It is enough to think of the delicious food, Scottish beer and the special types of whisky.

Scottish dance house in the city of Budapest

The Budapest Scottish Dance Club has been working successfully in the youth club of Angyalföld for many years. The traditionalist society was founded two years ago and they have been organizing weekly public dances since then. As you can read on the society’s homepage at www.bstk.hu, the dances are targeted mainly at beginner and intermediate-level dancers.

Mary Stuart’s death on the massage table

Zsótér Sándor director put the execution of Mary Stuart, the tragic queen of the Scots, on stage in a surprising and thought-provoking way in the Bárka theatre. On the small stage, the protagonist hardly ever gets off the massage table, which has a central role being both a bed and an instrument of torture. It is especially unique that the role of Mary Stuart and Queen Elisabeth, giving judgement on Mary’s future in a hysterical state, are both played by one actress, Spolarics Andrea. Burns evening at the Scottish Mission of Budapest

The church of the Budapest Scottish Mission was fragrant with Arrani whisky on the second evening of February. The Burns evening was organized and coordinated by Reverend Ken MacKenzie and it was spent in a familiar atmosphere. Honourable Major John Paterson, vice-president of the Robert Burns World Federation also participated in the event.

25 Scottish poems of 25 years - in Hungarian

Participants of the last literary evening organized in 2004 by the literary journal, Parnasszus, celebrated the publishing of an exclusive twin-anthology. The latest volume of the Átjáró (Passage) series, entitled “Inner spaces – 25 Scottish poems of 25 years”, was compiled by Ken Cockburn, poet and literary historian. A similar volume will be published in Scotland in March 2005, containing 25 Hungarian poems.

Exclusive lecture by Tom Hubbard in Budapest

A special cultural evening was held in the Ernst Museum in Budapest the other day. In his lecture, Tom Hubbard poet and literary historian, an honorary member of the Department of English Studies at the University of Glasgow, presented the exciting and surprising parallels between Scottish and Hungarian literature, with special emphasis on the works of Ady, for instance, who has had a great influence on modern literature and who, as he put it, is deeply understood by the Scottish.
